Veracruz Church

The oldest temple in Medellín
If when you are travelling you like to visit monument and explore a little bit more about the historical past a city has, then visiting the Veracruz Church in Medellín will fulfill both these desires.

This church, which is built in stone and covered in white plaster, is one of the most representative religious temples in the city and is located in the unique downtown area, near Carabobo Street and a few blocks away from the Berrio Park and the Metro station strategically placed near the park.

The Veracruz Church was declared cultural patrimony of the nation on March 12, 1982.

Take a walk back through time and treat your eyes to the magnificent history the church holds within its tapia and wooden walls and brick slab floors. These simple elements bring together characteristics of a time that today show the wonders of religious temples of yore.

Throw the history this church has suffer several modifications, because long time ago was in threat of ruin, for what it had to be demolished in its entirety for a later rebuilding.

At one time during its history, the church was named ‘Ermita de la Veracruz de los Forasteros’ and it was where foreigners were given the last rites.

This religious temple is one of the oldest religious monuments in the city, and represents colonial times in Latin America. It was built in 1712 and, that same year, it was declared a church. Since then, has lived through the tumultuous yet significant history of Medellín. The Veracruz is undoubtedly a symbol of pride for all Paisa people who recognize it as a historical monument and as architectural patrimony in the city.
