Medellín in the dry season: how to enjoy the city smartly
El Niño is currently affecting Colombia, and according to IDEAM, there is more than a 90% chance that it will continue through the first quarter of 2027, with the possibility of reaching strong intensity between October and December 2026.
That may sound a little intimidating. But if you’re coming to Medellín, there’s no need to put your plans on hold. The city remains green, lively and full of outdoor experiences. You just need to know how to explore it wisely.
What changes and what doesn’t
Medellín’s temperatures generally stay between 16 °C and 26 °C, but during El Niño, days can be sunnier and drier, with stronger UV radiation than usual.
Nothing a little planning can’t handle.
Here are five things worth keeping in mind before heading out:
- Stay hydrated. Carry water with you, especially if your plans include walking, visiting the rural districts or spending time outdoors. Heat can sneak up on you.
- Protect yourself from the sun. Medellín sits at a relatively high altitude, so UV radiation can be stronger than you might expect, even on cloudy days. Sunscreen, a hat and finding some shade when the sun is at its strongest are good allies.
- Plan outdoor activities wisely. Parque Arví, Medellín’s rural districts and its trails remain open, but before heading out, check the weather and the official channels for each destination to confirm current access conditions.
- Get travel insurance. It is always a good idea, but even more so when weather conditions can be variable. SURA offers travel assistance plans, and some credit cards also include medical coverage abroad. It is worth checking your benefits with your bank before you leave.
- Stick to official information. For weather alerts or specific recommendations, rely on IDEAM (ideam.gov.co) and the Medellín Mayor’s Office (medellin.gov.co). Don’t base your plans on forwarded messages or social media posts without an official source.

The city’s plans are still on
Jardín Botánico, Parques del Río, museums, walkable neighborhoods, local experiences, food, nightlife and the cultural calendar are all still here waiting for you.
Medellín doesn’t stop because of El Niño. It simply invites you to explore with a little more care: carry water, pay attention to the sun and be mindful of the conditions around you.
