International Tango Festival:
discover Manrique in Medellín
Did you know Medellín is considered Colombia’s tango capital and one of the most important tango cities in the world?
Tango arrived from the Río de la Plata region and found a second home in Medellín. Inspired by legendary figures such as Carlos Gardel, Astor Piazzolla and Aníbal Troilo, the genre took root in the city through artists like El Caballero Gaucho, gradually spreading across the northeastern neighborhoods. Today, after 20 years of a festival dedicated to this music of passion, nostalgia and neighborhood tradition, Medellín is taking a major step forward by advancing the process to recognize tango as Intangible Cultural Heritage of the District. In Medellín, when something becomes part of the city’s identity, people make sure it endures.
This June, from the 8th to the 14th, the entire city becomes a stage. More than 40 free events fill theaters, plazas and public spaces. And at the heart of it all is Manrique.
But there is something even more compelling than a festival lineup. This year marks one of the most significant moments for tango in Medellín as the city moves forward in recognizing this tradition as Intangible Cultural Heritage. A way of acknowledging that tango stopped being a guest long ago and became part of Medellín’s story.
The neighborhood where tango found a home
Reducing Manrique to tango alone would be unfair. The neighborhood also tells its story through street art, community memory, local food and the everyday moments that reveal themselves when you explore without rushing.
The Constelaciones Macro Mural is one of those places that simply cannot be captured in a single photograph. Impressive from a distance and even more striking up close, it features more than 500 painted façades, 30 murals created by local artists and collectives, and a story the community chose to tell in full color across the hillside. To experience it properly, wear comfortable shoes, keep an open mind and let local guides explain the meaning behind each street and wall.
Many visitors come searching for tango and end up discovering one of Medellín’s largest open-air galleries, built alongside the community and designed to tell the story of the neighborhood’s transformation through the voices of its residents.
If you want to keep exploring, Mirador El Encanto offers one of the best panoramic views of the Aburrá Valley. UVA de la Armonía brings together green spaces, recreation and culture in a single place. And if the neighborhood’s rhythm draws you in, Unión Latina and El Balcón de los Artistas welcome visitors interested in community dance and music workshops.
Manrique also knows its way around good food. Wiqu Gastrobar, Harry Pastelería and Martín Moreno Cervecería are excellent stops before or after your walk through the neighborhood.
If you want to make the most of your visit, download the Vive Manrique Guide and build your own itinerary. The guide brings together cultural routes, local dining spots, heritage landmarks and recommendations that help visitors discover different sides of the neighborhood. It is a great way to go beyond the usual tourist routes and experience a side of Medellín that many travelers have yet to discover.
