In Medellín, taking care of yourself is a way
of experiencing the city
There is something different about traveling for your own health or for the health of someone you love. Your itinerary changes, you slow things down, and suddenly the city becomes part of the process of healing and finding some peace of mind.
Medellín knows how to welcome you when that is the reason for your trip: internationally recognized clinics, specialized recovery facilities, a unique climate that stays comfortable throughout the year, incredible diversity across Antioquia, and a cultural and food scene that can make your stay feel like much more than a medical appointment.
In 2024, more than 23,000 people came to Medellín from other countries for medical reasons, whether for a pending diagnosis, a scheduled surgery, a specialist consultation or fertility treatment. Some came from the United States, others from the Caribbean or Europe. And most did not come for what you might expect. Diagnostic services and ophthalmology lead the list, ahead of cosmetic surgery.
Yes, Medellín welcomes you with leading clinics. But it also offers plenty of ways to make your stay more comfortable as you recover, without the pressure of rushing back home or trying to keep up with a full itinerary. Slow walks, varied food for those who need to eat well, and a climate that means you do not have to plan your trip around a particular season.
Five institutions that support your decision
Medellín and its Metropolitan Area are home to five institutions accredited by Joint Commission International (JCI), the largest concentration identified in Colombia.
JCI is considered the gold standard for hospital quality and patient safety worldwide. Every institution that earns the accreditation goes through a rigorous external evaluation of its clinical and administrative processes.

A city that brings that kind of event to the table is a city that takes its healthcare offer seriously.
Focus on your recovery. Medellín will take care of the rest
Here are two options for travelers who need a specialized, comfortable place to stay while they recover:
Breathe Post Op
Postoperative Recovery · Laureles
Clinical support throughout your recovery
Is the only post-operative recovery facility in Medellín with an official license from the Antioquia Health Authority (Resolution DHSS0750513). It has a medical office and procedure room in the same location, registered nursing care, lymphatic drainage, wound care and bilingual assistance, so you can put your phone down and focus on your recovery in your own language.
Located in Laureles, it is a good option for people traveling alone who want clinical support during their recovery.
MedCare Home
Recovery house · Laureles
Recover in comfort and privacy
MedCare Home, also in Laureles, the neighborhood named Medellín’s coolest by Time Out, is a recovery house offering specialized nutrition tailored to each patient’s needs, personalized 24/7 nursing care, executive transportation and rooms ranging from standard accommodations to suites designed to impress even the most demanding guest.
It is designed for those who want comfort and privacy while they recover.
Both facilities provide support and assistance during your stay. Neither replaces the medical institution where your procedure was performed. But they can make a real difference when it comes to giving your body and mind a more comfortable place to recover.
The city, your best companion
Te contamos, sin que sea un secreto, dos opciones para quienes necesitan un espacio especializado, cómodo y tranquilo durante su recuperación.
16 °C - 26 °C
Un clima que acompaña todo el año
Medellín’s climate is one of those good surprises. Temperatures stay between 16 °C and 26 °C throughout the year, with no extreme seasons to complicate your plans or your recovery. And that changes things.
Close to the city center, there are places that invite you to slow down. Jardín Botánico has an Orquideorama that can take your breath away, a butterfly house and conservation areas where trees and wildlife coexist right in the middle of the city. It is one of those places where you arrive thinking you will take a quick walk and end up staying much longer.
Parques del Río is the corridor that brought the Medellín River and the city’s public space together. It is ideal for walking, cycling or simply sitting down and watching the world go by without rushing. The rural districts of Santa Elena and San Cristóbal offer a chance to reconnect with the countryside just minutes from the city: farms, gardens, local aromas and a slower pace your body will appreciate. This month, San Sebastián de Palmitas, Medellín’s westernmost rural district, is an option for those who really want to disconnect: viewpoints, hiking, silence and nature far from the rush of downtown.
Any outdoor activity should, of course, be planned according to your medical team’s recommendations.
And if staying active is part of your routine, Medellín has more than 1,000 sports facilities, Sunday bike routes, parks with outdoor gyms across different neighborhoods and a culture of movement that you can see on the streets from early in the morning.
Good food makes the trip even better
In Medellín, we think about the little things that help you feel at home, or maybe even better than at home.
Medellín Sí Sabe is the city’s food guide, organized around three different paths: Berraquera, focused on traditional and generous paisa cooking; Mecatear, with snacks and street food flavors; and Saberes, with experiences that connect you with the region, its ingredients and its producers.
Each one offers a different way to eat well, discover new flavors and make the most of your stay.
Farmers’ markets and agrotourism farms in the rural districts add fresh produce, herbal infusions and local gardens to the mix, bringing visitors closer to the food traditions of the region.
And if your time and recovery allow it, Manrique is the neighborhood to discover that Medellín has plenty more to share with those who come for healthcare. Carrera 45 is the starting point for a route that brings together live tango at Casa Gardeliana, the Macromural Constelaciones, an urban art project covering more than 500 façades that local artists and community groups transformed to tell their own story in full color, El Mirador El Encanto, with one of the best views of the Aburrá Valley, and the UVA de la Armonía, where green spaces, recreation and culture come together.
Bosque Montecarlo completes the route with shade, trails and a little more calm. The Guía Vive Manrique on medellin.travel has all the details to help you plan your visit around the time and energy you have available.
Before you travel: what to have ready
Check whether your health insurance covers medical care abroad. SURA offers travel assistance plans, and some credit cards include international medical assistance. Check your benefits directly with your bank before leaving home. For medical procedures, verify your specialist’s credentials with the relevant Colombian medical society and confirm that the facility is licensed by the Antioquia Health Authority.
If your procedure requires recovery time, arrange your accommodation and transportation to follow-up appointments in advance. Do not assume that every city activity is appropriate immediately after a procedure.
- Check your medical coverage
- Check your card benefits
- Verify healthcare professionals and institutions
- Plan your recovery
